Hendershot's Sporting Goods began in 1961 in the historic Potomac River town of Hancock, Maryland. Founded by Carl and Glenn Hendershot (father and son), the business was located in the former Hancock Theater building just a stone's throw from the famous C&O Canal.
With only 20 guns in inventory and a small selection of ammunition and dog supplies, as well as equipment for fishing, camping, and athletics, the Hendershots worked hard to satisfy customers with the perfect rifle. Glenn became a talented gunsmith, and when Carl retired, another son, Gerald "Jerry" became a partner in the business.
In 1997, Glenn retired, and Jerry's son Lance brought a third generation of Hendershots to the business. Jerry and Lance continue the family tradition, and Hendershot's has grown to become Maryland's premier gun retailer, with the largest inventory of fine firearms in the state.
